Preserve, Restore and Improve St Michael's

PRISM stands for Preserve, Restore and Improve St Michael's.

St Michael's is fundraising both to restore and repair the exterior of the church, and to improve the interior. St Michael and All Angels, Blackheath Park, built in 1828 - 30, is a Georgian, Gothic Revival, grade II listed* church and the landmark building on the Cator Estate. The spire is renowned as the Needle of Kent.

In terms of the exterior, we plan to restore the tower and spire, all the exterior stonework, including the finials and porches, and carry out works to the roof to make it watertight. The estimated cost of these works is £356,000.

In terms of the interior we plan to install glass doors to conserve heat and to make the entrance of the church more welcoming; to install more efficient underfloor heating, and make the floor the same level throughout the nave; to install new lighting to enhance its atmosphere for events, making it more conducive to worship and public performances; to remove the masonry font and install an attractive smaller font to the side of the entrance area; to move the pulpit and associated war memorial to the south east corner to mark a new prayer space; to level the floor at the east end and to enable wheelchair and disabled access by installing ramps on the north side. The estimated cost of these works is £609,000.

We have already raised £965,000 from members of the congregation, friends, former members, local residents and businesses through fundraising events as well as from grants from charitable organisations. We give thanks to God for that.

Our intention is also to undertake essential internal decoration of the church while there is scaffolding in place, which will reduce the estimated cost to £75,000. If we receive sufficient funding by 4 December 2017 we will be able put this into the contract for work to be completed by June 2018.

We ask that you give generously to save and improve a cherished building, which is such a landmark site of South East London. Please help us in this vital work.
